This week our focus was on refining our cloth simulations and updating the shot list. We completed an initial render pass for all shots to better understand how they will ultimately be composited and edited. In our weekly meeting, our mentors provided valuable, targeted feedback which allowed us to make specific improvements now that a solid foundation for lighting, textures, and effects has been established.

  • Feedback

    • Shot specific

      • Shot 1 lighting should match the reference image

      • Shot 2 could so logo embroidery

      • Find a way to shorten shot 4

    • FX

      • Reduce “curtain rod” feeling in the sheet animation at the beginning of shot 4

      • Pre-roll cloth simulations so wrinkles are established

      • Dampen cloth settings to improve simulation quality

      • Create softer attachments on the comforter so it feels less like a rod

      • Explore a better method for sheets to enter the start of shot 4

Much of the feedback was tailored to individual shots, with one recurring note concerning the length of Shot 4. As a team, we agreed that the elements within this shot would be more effective if separated into distinct moments. As a result, we revised the shot list to better support pacing and clarity

  • Shot 1 weaving (stays the same)

  • Shot 2 macro embroidery (stays the same)

  • Shot 3 embroidery with "N" logo

  • Shot 4 sheet wave transition

  • Shot 5 pillows fall on bed

  • Shot 6 comforter flies on

  • Shot 7 3D sculpt of bed in room, with live action

While Mia and Nidhi were working on the effects. I began creating the lighting for these shots, with additional help from Ella. For Shots 5, 6, and 7, we decided to maintain a consistent bedroom setting. Shot 4 was now broken into separate moments, with tighter camera direction preserving visual continuity that became especially important as the bed is progressively assembled. With the other 4 shots, we kept to a solid warm neutral brown to allow the ‘micro’ nature of these shots to shine.

We also decided that the final bed should be fully sculpted to ensure complete control over its appearance. Using ZBrush, I sculpted both the comforter and the throw blanket for the final shot. The pillows were sourced from Mia’s simulation for shot 5.
